Remarks by President McAleese at CONSOLE Annual Conference
Tá an-áthas orm bheith i bhur láthair ar an ocáid seo. Tá me buíoch dibh as an cuireadh agus an fáilte fíorchaoin a chur sibh romham.
Thank you all for the very warm welcome. As Patron of Console I was very pleased to accept the invitation from Paul Kelly to be with you this morning. I am grateful for this opportunity to honour the essential work that you do in the cause of suicide prevention and in caring for those bereaved by suicide.
The theme chosen for this conference 'Remembering the past, Living the present, Shaping the future' neatly encapsulates so much of the work of Console - you know only too well why each one of these facets is so important. In this room are men and women who waken each morning to face the most harrowing of shadows from the past. Somehow they have to find the energy to face this day and somehow they have to find the energy, faith, hope and determination to build a future very different from the one they had once hoped for. The intensity of their grief is known only to themselves. The depth of their loss and loneliness is often beyond words. The length of each day that they are awake can be a grinding realm of agitation and of questions that have no satisfactory answers. The awful thing is that none of us, no matter how deep our compassion, can go life's journey for the bereaved. The good thing however is that we can go life's journey with them. That is why Console exists for we each have the capacity to accompany those on this journey through bereavement to a renewed zest for life. It also exists to do whatever it can to reduce the incidence of suicide so that fewer and fewer individuals and families will be beset by this grief that demands so much of the bereaved.

Diploma in Suicidology 2009
Commencing the Friday 2nd October 2009
All who are interested in delivering Human Services in Ireland today are aware of the toll that suicide has taken on families, individuals and communities in every part of the country. Largely because of our cultural orientation and our value for human life, we are interested in and seek solutions to this complex problem.
This course design draws on a variety of skills and strategies associated with support, meditation, counselling, consultation, persuasion, psychology and attitude formation. It is based primarily on the person-centred approach to helping and adheres faithfully to the principles of the helping relationship that give it its ethical quality. It strives to meet the needs of many who wish to offer support and help but often feel that the knowledge and interpersonal skills they possess need refining and upgrading in order to be efficient and competent in addressing the issues raised by suicide.

Console Galway formally launched
On Wednesday the 16th of May 2007, Mary Harney TD, Minister for Health and Children formally launched Console House in Galway City. Console House provides Counselling and Support to those Bereaved through Suicide in the Western Region. The launch was followed by a formal Reception at the Galway City Museum, Spanish Arch.
Before officially launching the Counselling and Support Service, Mary Harney TD, Minister for Health said she was a great admirer of Console, because they did a great job with relatively small resources. We need a faciliity like this virtually in every county in Ireland ' she added.
Marie whyte, Console Galway's Counselling Manager, said the facility was offering a much-needed service for the Galway area. ' It's important that people who are bereaved by suicide have a safe place where they can go and speak about their tragedy in a confidential environment with a qualified counsellor' she said.
Brid Ridge, an Oughterard mother who lost her 22 year old son through suicide two years age, told those gathered at the launch that Console had helped her greatly since she started attending the Console Support Group. ' I find it a great help, because you are talking to other people who have been in the same situation, and they know where you are coming from ' she said.

LAUNCH OF CONSOLE LIMERICK
Tim O'Malley, TD Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, officially launched the CONSOLE Limerick Service on Monday the 26th of March 2007 at Console House, Oakville Terrace, New Street, Limerick.
Josephine Quinlan, Counselling Co-ordinator for Console Limerick said ‘ We are delighted to have the Minister officially launch Console Limerick. His presence is an acknowledgement of the importance of such a service for people who have been bereaved through suicide.
It can be a very traumatic experience and in today’s world with its stresses and pressures, those carrying deep pain and strong emotions can feel paralyzed be their grief. Taking time to talk to a trained professional counsellor in a compassionate and confidential environment can help people understand what they are going through and their grieving process.
A distressed person may find it hard to look for help but we are here, and we understand. And if they make even the initial effort they will soon find, as others who’ve attended Console all over the country that their grief can be eased and they can begin to heal again ‘
Minister O' Malley said ' The encouragement and professional counselling and support provided by Console for those who suffer the intense trauma of bereavement through suicide of a loved one is of immense importance '
